First Job Guide: From Campus to Corporate Life

Landing your first job is one of the most important transitions of your professional life. The rules of the game change completely from college, and nobody gives you a manual.

What Employers Actually Look For in Freshers

Marks matter but rarely decide. Employers hiring freshers primarily assess: communication skills, attitude and learning agility, basic technical competence, and cultural fit. Projects, internships, and extracurricular involvement matter significantly more than CGPA above a certain threshold. A 7.5 CGPA with two strong internships will beat an 8.5 CGPA with no practical experience at most companies.

The Job Search Strategy That Works

Identify 20-30 companies that genuinely interest you, research them properly, and apply thoughtfully to each. A tailored application to 20 companies will generate more interviews than a mass-blast of 200 generic applications. Use LinkedIn to connect with alumni — they are usually happy to talk, and a warm referral increases your chances of getting an interview by 5-10x.

Your First 90 Days

Arrive on time, every day, without exception. Ask questions constantly. Take notes in every meeting. Meet as many people as possible in your first month. Deliver on every commitment you make — if you say Friday, deliver Thursday. In a world of people who overpromise and underdeliver, simply doing what you said makes you stand out immediately.

Common Fresher Mistakes to Avoid

Do not job-hop in your first year without very good reason. Do not focus obsessively on salary in the early years — focus on learning and the quality of your manager. A great manager who stretches you is worth more than a 10% salary difference. And do not neglect your network — the people you meet in your first few years will be colleagues, clients, and friends for decades.
