Getting a Job in Australia: Guide for Indian Professionals

Australia has become one of the most accessible destinations for Indian professionals seeking permanent residency alongside strong career opportunities. With a transparent skills-based immigration system and genuine need for skilled workers, it deserves serious consideration.

The Skills Shortage Reality

Australia faces critical shortages across technology, healthcare, construction, engineering, and education. The Skills in Demand list directly influences visa processing times. Current high-demand occupations include registered nurses, software engineers, civil and structural engineers, electricians, aged care workers, and teachers.

The 482 Temporary Skills Shortage Visa

The TSS 482 visa allows Australian employers to sponsor overseas workers for up to 4 years. The employer must show they tried to fill the role locally and pay you market salary. Many 482 holders transition to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186).

Skills Assessment and Points Test

For independent skilled migration, you need a skills assessment from the relevant authority (ACS for IT, Engineers Australia for engineering, AHPRA for healthcare). Submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. The Skilled Independent visa (189) requires 65 points minimum — awarded for age, English, employment, qualifications, and partner skills.

State Nomination: A Faster Route

Each Australian state runs its own skilled migration programme, often at lower points requirements. Victoria, NSW, Queensland and Western Australia all run active streams. Cities like Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra offer strong job markets, lower living costs than Sydney, and easier paths to state nomination — making them worth serious consideration.
