Getting a US Work Visa from India: Full Guide
The United States remains the most sought-after destination for Indian professionals in technology, finance, healthcare and academia. The path is complex but well-trodden — hundreds of thousands of Indians navigate it successfully each year.
H-1B: The Most Common Route
The H-1B is a specialty occupation visa requiring at least a bachelor's degree and employer sponsorship. The major limitation: only 85,000 H-1B visas are issued annually (65,000 regular cap plus 20,000 for US master's degree holders) and demand far exceeds supply. Selection is by lottery, typically held in March. Large IT services companies and US tech giants file thousands of H-1B petitions — getting a role at one of these is the most straightforward H-1B path.
L-1: For Multinational Employees
If you work for a multinational with offices in both India and the US, the L-1 intracompany transfer visa may be your fastest route. No annual cap, no lottery. L-1A is for managers and executives; L-1B for specialised knowledge employees. You typically need at least one year of employment with the company outside the US in the past three years.
O-1: For Exceptional Ability
The O-1 visa is for individuals with extraordinary ability demonstrated through awards, publications, high salary relative to peers, or critical roles in distinguished organisations. It is more achievable than many think for experienced professionals with a strong track record — the standard is 'extraordinary within your field', not globally famous.
Green Card Routes
For permanent residency, Indian nationals face long backlogs under employment-based categories. The EB-2 NIW (National Interest Waiver) does not require employer sponsorship if you can demonstrate your work benefits the US broadly. Consulting an immigration attorney is strongly recommended before pursuing any US visa route.
